2011 Member - Guest Results
In an upset of epic proportions, Wes Stephenson and partner Nick Willis defeated perennial contender John Murphree and guest Tracy Lentz in the 2011 member-guest shootout. Victory required playing the 18th hole twice before Murph and Tracy settled for second place against the unstoppable Stephenson and his partner.
Wes's victory attoned somewhat for an early exit from the shootout several years ago, caused by the worst sand shots ever witnessed or recorded by the DCC Golfmeister. Back then, Wes and his partner practiced getting out of the sand several times on hole #10, allowing them to retire early to the bar to drown their sorrows. This time around it was all business as they dispatched pretender after pretender on their determined march to the shootout championship. At the end it was just Wes and Nick against Murph and this year's partner, Tracy, who was so good he was able to overcome all but one of Murph's bad shots.
When the dust settled, a par on 18 (the second time around) secured the victory as dusk settled over the ancient and venerable Decatur Country Club. Two rain delays had slowed play and dampened the field, but Wes and Nick were undaunted on their march to victory. Unfortunately, the delays eliminated any lengthy celebration since Nick had to head back to Birmingham and real life. With the summer off from teaching, Wes does not have a real life until schol starts again in the fall, so he is still celebrating.
Note: Murph was seen in the scorer's tent after the shootout taking applications from non-members desiring to be his partner next year. Among the applicants were some former partners, several of whom had been relegated to playing with such has-beens as Mike Burnett and other non-contenders. Murph claims he has already reserved a spot again in next year's shootout finals. Golfmeister wonders if Murph has a permanent pass to the finals.
Also, Golfmeister found it very sad to see Paul Wicklund watching the shootout from the sidelines this year. Knowing Paul's proven ability, it was obvious that his partner had let him down this year after they had made the shootout for several years in a row. That's OK Paul, you can drink more beer when watching than when playing!
