Decatur Country Club offers a challenging 18
hole executive golf course for the enjoyment of our members. Our course
features bermuda grass fairways and beautiful bent grass greens.
Because we are located conveniently in the heart of southeast Decatur,
our course is land locked and confined to an area of 90 acres.
Our course is open 6 days a week from 8:00 AM
until dark with full member services (pro shop, carts, practice range,
snack bar). The course is also open on Mondays for golfers who walk,
but the remainder of the club services are closed on Monday.
Unlike other courses in our area, tee times are
readily available at Decatur Country Club. The percentage of our
membership that plays golf is relatively low, so our course is almost
always available for play. Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons are
the only periods that normally require tee times, and groups are
available (see below) on those days so you are always assured of a
game. Almost every summer afternoon you can walk on the course and
begin play with no delays, no crowds, no cut off jeans, no backwards
ball caps, and no tee shirts.
Our golf course is short by modern standards at
6100 yards, but it plays longer than that due to several holes that
require most golfers to lay up on one or more shots. Tight, narrow
fairways, strategically placed ball-eating ponds, 62 sand traps, trees
placed specifically with your frustration in mind, enough rough to tax
your vocabulary, and out of bounds on many holes make the course a
formidable opponent for most golfers. Winning scores in club and
amateur tournaments generally average from only a few strokes under par
to even par. The USGA course rating is 69.1 and the slope rating is 122.
The course
length does not offer a multitude of rewards to the purely long ball
hitter, although length is very important on certain holes. The course
does force the golfer to be accurate and to fully develop their short
game to be successful. It is especially appealing to middle aged and
senior golfers and to our lady golfers, most of whom walk the course
while playing.
With today's new club technology, almost anyone
can hit a long ball, but only a few possess the true skills of a
shotmaking purist. It's not how long you can drive the ball, it's the
skill behind the club that will challenge golfer's at Decatur
Country Club.
The course is gently rolling. Its length and
gentle terrain make it ideal for walking, a fact taken advantage of by
most of our golfers of all ages. Rounds played on foot in three and
one-half to four hours or less are the norm at Decatur Country Club.
Tee times are readily available. There are several
golf groups
you can play with if you like company during
your forays around the course. Afternoons and evenings find a lot of
singles and twosomes on the course searching for a solution to the
elusive game. Summer evenings find regular twilight golf outings where
husbands and wives bond (or sometimes temporarily de-bond) playing
together in a scramble format.
The club has several tournaments every year.
January sees the Iron Man Tournament (3 clubs, a putter, and a heavy
coat). May generally hosts the Member-Member Tournament, followed in
June by the 3-day Member-Guest Tournament. Both of these tournaments
end with a shootout for the flight winners, providing additional fun for
players and galleries alike. The Club Championship Tournament is held
during the 3rd weekend of August, just before the Auburn and Alabama
fanatics remember their football loyalties and stop speaking to each
other. Our course also hosts a number of charity tournaments, usually
on Mondays when the course is closed, during the course of the year.
We also have a very active Women's Golf
Association which provides fun and fellowship for the lady golfers in
our club. The WGA members include a wide variety of ages and skill
levels, so there is always someone available for our ladies to play
with. The WGA sponsors a number of tournaments and Playdaze for the
enjoyment of its members.
