Decatur Country Club - Superintendent's News

April was a good month and the Greens, Fairways, Tees, and Roughs are coming in nicely due to the right combination of rainfall and warm weather. The Greens are at a good speed for the all around golfing membership.

On May 4 th, we will be aerifying with ¼" tines and pulling plugs and leaving the holes open. Aerification is a necessary and highly beneficial golf course practice in promoting healthy turf. Aerification achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green’s roots, and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Over time, the traffic from golfers’ feet (as we as mowing equipment_ tends to compact the soil under the putting green-particularly when the soil contains a lot of clay. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. With out oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die. The aerification technique that we will be using is a machine with "tines" that will simply poke holes through the soil profile. This process will relieve some compaction but will heal quickly.

We are continually trimming trees, spraying follower beds and edging bunkers along with summer maintenance program.

It is the perfect time of year for golf. Come out bring a guest and enjoy your golf course. Please remember to repair your ball mark, fill divots with sand, and rake your bunker.

See you on the course,
Dennis James, CGCS
